Frequently Asked Questions
about FileWrangler and ZipWrangler
Q: Can I print or save a listing of my files?
- Click on the file listing window which contains the files you wish to print or save. Next, go to the File menu and click on Print Directory. This will allow you to either print the contents of the currently selected listing window, or save it as a text file.
Q: How do I make a file span multiple disks?
- In FileWrangler, select the file (or group of files) which you wish to split. Next, click on the "Disk" menu and select "Split files across drive...". The resulting dialog will allow you to select the size of each piece of the file(s) and the name of the self-running EXE used to assemble the pieces. Once you have selected the options, click on the "Split" button. Your information will be written to your drive split into sequential files (e.g., if you called your file BOB.EXE, the files written would consist of BOB.EXE, BOB.001, BOB.002, BOB.003, etc.). You can then copy these files onto diskettes or whatever. This feature is great for doing a quick "installation" program or transferring large files to another computer.
Q: I detest having file icons in the lists. How can I remove them from the display?
- You can replace the icons with bullets by clicking on the Options menu and going to Set Preferences. Look for this option at the bottom of the Appearance page. If you want to eliminate even the bullet, you can use an icon editor like our IconForge to edit the bullet icon within Wrangler.exe and make the bullet transparent (you can also do this to customize many of the other icons which are used in FileWrangler). If you edit icons within FileWrangler, keep a backup copy of Wrangler.exe, in case you need to restore the original.
Q: Is there any way I can add my own favorite directories and file types to the drop-down lists on the file windows?
- Go to the Options menu and click on Set Preferences. On the sample screen at the right of the Appearance page, click on the Favorite Directories field to add or remove folders. Click on the *.* field to add or remove file types.
Q: I want files to be completely erased when I delete them. Where is the option for this?
- Click on the Options menu and select Set Preferences. On the Confirm Actions tab, there are options to either Recycle or Delete files deleted from FileWrangler. Since deleting does not always completely remove all traces of a file, there is also an option to Wipe the file, which will also overwrite the data within the file.
Q: I need to know the number of words in a file I am writing. Is there any way to find this in either the Text or HTML editor?
- The Text Editor will allow you to do a word count. Click on the Options menu and choose Display Word Count. However, since this function can slow down typing for large documents, we recommend that you normally leave the function Off, and only use it when you need to do a final word count. You can access the Text Editor either by highlighting a text file and then clicking on the Edit icon above the file list, or by opening the editor under the File menu.
Q: How can I maximize the area used for viewing the file list?
- You can drag the small handles on the left side of the icon bars to rearrange these. You can also click on the View menu to remove the list window's Status Panel and/or remove the drives from the list (you can still access drives from the drop-down list on the icon bar).
