Frequently Asked Questions
about pc/Recall
Q: How can I use pc/Recall to run MSBACKUP to schedule an unattended backup?
- The Win98 MS-Backup does not work with the normal Windows task scheduler. You can use pc/Recall to run the program unattended, but because MS-Backup has a few quirks, here is a detailed list of the steps you need to implement this:
- Open pc/Recall;
- Click on the Bookmark Editor icon (the icon at the top of the row on the left side, or use the Create Bookmark item from the menu);
- Click on one of the colored Bookmark Contents buttons which does not list any applications;
- Click on the yellow folder icon button (Load File) at the bottom of the window;
- Locate and select MSBACKUP.EXE (by default it is installed in the C:\Program Files\Accessories\Backup folder);
- MSBACKUP.EXE should now be listed in the Bookmark Contents field on the right side (if it was placed in another field, you can use the arrow buttons to move it);
- Click on MSBACKUP.EXE to highlight it;
- Click on the Set Parameters button (the briefcase icon at the bottom of the window);
- Highlight MSBACKUP.EXE, and then click on the Edit button (the icon with a pencil);
- Under the Working Directory field, click on the yellow folder to insert the C:\Program Files\Accessories\BACKUP\SYSTEM directory;
- Under the Stuff Keyboard With field, type the keystrokes you want to send. For non-character keys (e.g., Enter, Tab, Arrows, etc.), click on the yellow folder button to select each key from the list. For ALT key combinations, use the "@" followed by a space, and then the letter you wish to select (e.g., @ S). Click OK once you are through, and then OK to return to the main screen;
- To schedule the bookmark to run at a particular time, click on the Clock button at the bottom of the main window.
Q: I have pc/Recall launching applications at a particular time. One of these programs has a message box which must be answered with an "OK" before the program continues. How can I tell pc/Recall to send the Enter key to allow the program to continue executing?
- Select the Bookmark containing this program. Next, click on the small briefcase icon at the bottom of the window to edit the command line attributes. Select the program's title and then click on the edit button (the icon containing a pencil which is next to the Help button). Use the "Stuff Keyboard With" field to type in any text to send to the application. To send non-character keys (such as ENTER), click on the yellow folder button to the right of the field, and select a key from the list.
Q: How can I have pc/Recall send Alt and Ctrl key combos to an application which it launches?
- To insert an Alt key combination, use the @ symbol, followed by a space, followed by the letter. (e.g., "@ F" would send Alt+F).
- To insert a Ctrl key combination, use the ^ symbol, followed by a space, followed by the letter. (e.g., "^ X" would send Ctrl+X).
Q: How can I set programs to automatically run before I shut down my system?
- If you have set pc/Recall to automatically run in your system tray on StartUp, you can designate that the contents of a bookmark be run before pc/Recall is closed (this would occur before the system shuts down). To do this, go to the main Bookmark Contents window (use the icon, or use Create Bookmark from the menu) and place the programs you want to run into one of the current bookmarks. Click on the Exit Event button found under that bookmark. Our SecurDesk! and SecurDesk! LV products also allow you to specify shut-down events, with the advantage that users cannot shut down these programs before the system is shut down.
