Size and Colors


Before you begin editing your new icon or cursor, you need to specify the size of the icon you will be creating, and the number of colors it will contain. Click on the arrows next to each field to drop down the standard selections for the type of image you will be creating. Click on the OK button to continue editing with the size and colors indicated, or click on the Cancel button to return to editing without opening a new window.

COLOR: The allowable number of colors for a cursor or animated cursor under Windows is 2-color (black&white), 16, 256 or 16-million colors. The allowable resolution used for an icon file can be 2, 16, 256, or 16-million colors. The allowable number of colors for animated GIF's is limited to 16 or 256 colors.

SIZE: The standard size for icons and cursors is 32x32 pixels
. Some versions of Windows allow you to display other sizes (16x16 pixels, 32x32 pixels and 48x48 pixels are common). IconForge does, however, allow you to create custom sizes from 8x8 pixels all the way to 72x72 pixels. The allowable size for animated icons/cursors is limited to 32x32 pixels.

Note, that you may switch sizes and color resolutions while editing.
